Whiskers grow in clusters at various places on the body, including above the eyes, on the chin, on forelegs, near the ears, and above the upper lip. They are anatomically distinct from other hair: stiffer, larger in diameter, and longer. The follicles are heavily innervated and contain a blood sinus, with each whisker served by 100–200 primary afferent nerve cells in many species. The last common ancestor of all extant mammals had vibrissae, and the trait likely evolved in non-mammalian cynodont ancestors during the Triassic period.
